Letter received from researchers... Hi! Received your letter it brought back some memories. In 1995 and 1996 we filled a mission in England and lived in a village called Wood Walton. We lived about 10 to 15 miles from Abbots Ripton, where our post office was. We had a friend who wrote a book about Wood Walton. In the back he had copied some of the census records of the families living in the Wood Walton area. He copied the 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 and the 1891 censuses of those living in that area. I did not find the family in any but 1871. This what it said: John Mackay, head of the house, 58 years old and married was a railway labourer who was born in Scotland. Now the LDS Family History Centers have the Old Parochial Records of Scotland and I think it is also on-line. There you may find his birth date and exact place in Scotland as well as the names of his parents. They list them by the surname and also the given name. They are very good records and go back past the time that Scotland's government recorded them. They are old church records. The road they lived on was called the Railway Huts Road. His wife, Jane, was 49 and it said they thought she was born is Glousters, England. No town was mentioned, just the shire. They had a son, William Grant Mackay was an unmarried railway labourer and was 22 at the time. He was born in Folser(?), Warwicks, England. That made me think they weren't sure of the village and are sure of the shire. They also had a daughter, 15, named Flora Adalaide Mackay born in Abbots Ritpon, Hunts, England. The last child named was John Hugh Mackay, a son who was 13 and listed as a labourer also born in Abbots Ripton. You may want to check these other census records to see if they are in other areas in England. I hope this is some value to you. I work in an LDS Family History Center and I am sure it is on line. so good luck! Grace and Claude Li | |
